This encode uses the audio and video from the Japanese Shochiku Blu-ray, whilst using Masters of Cinema’s release for its subtitles. As some of you may know, there’s also a Blu-ray released by Criterion of this film. However there’s some “controversy” involving that particular release. If you want to read more about it, there’s a discussion in this thread. In short they are questioning the Criterion release for it’s apparent cropping and contrast boosting compared to the MoC/Shochiku release (DVDBeaver comparsion). The encoder had this in mind when choosing his source.
