I had problems playing this using VLC 2.2.4 until I re-muxed with mkvmerge. At repeated points within the film video would freeze and audio would jump to close to the end.
In case anyone else has similar issues, this was easily fixed:
Opening with mkvmerge gui I found two video tracks. One MPEG-4, and one Quicktime. Removing the Quicktime track allowed the video to play correctly. I don’t know what was in there, it barely changed the file size, but it was interfering with playback.
